NEW DIGITAL CATALOG CELEBRATES THE PRINTS AND LEGACIES OF

FAITH RINGGOLD AND BETYE SAAR

Ringgold|Saar digital catalog 2023

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The David C. Driskell Center is pleased to announce the launch of a digital catalog prompted by popular demand from visitors as well as local and national media attention. This new publication of a groundbreaking exhibition, RINGGOLD | SAAR: Meeting on the Matrix celebrates the extraordinary prints made by two of America's most influential artists.

Faith Ringgold (b.1930), an accomplished artist, teacher and writer whose works have been exhibited in major museums across the world, explores themes of race, gender and identity. Best known for her quilted and painted story quilt, she tells the stories of African American women throughout history.

Betye Saar (b.1926), an iconic assemblage artist whose works incorporate found objects, photographs, and sculpted materials explores the themes of African American history and culture. Her works challenge stereotypical representations of African American in art and culture at large, leaving a space for interpretation and redefinition of societal constructs.

The digital catalog is released in conjunction with the closing of RINGGOLD | SAAR: Meeting on the Matrix on May 22nd 2023. The exhibition showcased incredible print works by the two artists, putting them in direct conversation for the very first time. The piece explores thematics around their works with the exceptional contributions in the introduction by Sola Saar Augusston, Betye Saar’s grand-daughter and Michele Wallace, Faith Ringgold’s daughter. Other contributors include Professor Curlee Raven Holton, Professor Jordana Moore Saggese, Maura Callahan, Ashley Cope, Joohee Kim and Caroline Kipp.

The digital exhibition catalog is available online to view click here.

This digital catalog was made possible thanks to the generous contribution of Cleophus Thomas Jr., Cheryl Edwards, and Dr. Robert Steele. Special thanks to JJ Chrystal Designs and the DCDC team for putting this publication together.
